We visited for the first time and had a delicious Sunday lunch. I enjoyed my meal so much that I decided to get some pastries, for later. At the counter, the lady sounded proud of her cakes. I asked for a cinnamon roll and a slice of frangipane. Then something odd happened. She put my cinnamon roll straight into a microwave oven and started to reheat it for 30 seconds. I asked her to stop. She did, but she was strangely reluctant, and said 'it's from yesterday and a bit..' Okay, so the roll is stale, I thought, and I wished if I hadn't chosen a stale cinnamon roll among other nice looking products. But too late, I was already committed to pay for it and I did not have the courage to confront her. As she handed over the roll, she advised me to reheat it in the oven for 5 minutes. Once home, I was so eager to find out how stale it was, and cut a small piece. Indeed, it was dry, hard, and unpleasant, as the lady implied.

Came upon this excellent café just across the road from the Buttermarket. Both the owner and the young waitress who served me were very friendly and made me feel really welcome. The downstairs café is cosy with comfortable banquettes, lots of nice plants and magazines to read. Found the log fire very inviting on a chilly wet day! There's another cosy room and toilets upstairs. They serve sandwiches, salads and light lunches, and you can order wine and beer as well as hot drinks. Opted for the ploughman's lunch and it really was a cut above average: lovely thick ham, terrine, cheese, and hard-boiled egg with chutney, grapes, and a crisp salad sprinkled with pumpkin seeds. Very tasty and filling, and the bread was so fresh! The tea was nice and hot. Could not resist trying a tiffin for afters, and it was delicious! The lunch cost a bit more than I'd normally pay, but it was well worth it for the quality of the food and service. Afterwards I had a look inside their little shop next door. Lots of foodie treats and also some nice crafts, pictures, toiletries and gifts. The lady who served me was very helpful, and I bought a lovely toiletry bag. Overall a very enjoyable lunch experience. I highly recommend!

Easily one of the best places for lunch in Barney. A well thought out menu that offers a lot while being quite simple, made better by the fact that there are clearly no corners cut in the kitchen. Really tasty food and drinks. Fantastic service and setting.

I think this is one of Durhams finest cafes. The interior is so well decorated it's hard to not fall in love the decor. The food eaten outside was just excellent and the staff were fab. Not badly priced either.. Downstairs is a delightful little shop selling everything from food to hand made gifts. I honestly can't wait to visit again.
